Dermikelp

Body and hair care made with nutrient-rich sea kelp – sustainably harvested by hand from the cool, fertile waters off the coast of South Africa. 3

Dermikelp

Not all Kelp was created equal 8

Different types of kelp grow naturally in the sea. But we’ve focused our attention on one species of brown kelp with a blend of nutrients that can soothe, sensitive skin. 9

Ecklonia maxima grows in lush underwater forests off the west coast of South Africa 10, away from major shipping lanes. We sustainably harvest the kelp by hand to conserve this precious resource, and process it carefully to preserve its natural goodness. 11 So every time you use Dermikelp® body and hair care, you can be sure it’s as sensitive to the environment as it is to your skin. 12

WHAT MAKES ECKLONIA MAXIMA SPECIAL

The power of Ecklonia Maxima kelp

The power of Ecklonia Maxima kelp

While there are almost 400 different types of kelp 16, nature has cleverly packaged a rich blend of nutrients into the brown sea kelp, Ecklonia maxima. We’ve known about the health benefits of this kelp for decades 17. But having researched the properties of Ecklonia maxima further 18, we’ve used it as an active ingredient in our Dermikelp® products in the form of CEM-K – its concentrated liquid form 19. And for the first time in the UK, you can discover the benefits of this sea plant in Dermikelp® for yourself.

Where it grows

Where it grows

South Africa’s rugged and unspoiled west coast provides a fertile underwater haven for Sea Kelp forests to thrive. Bathed in sunlight and far from major shipping lanes, the constant surge of cool mineral-rich waters between Cape Agulhas and northern Namibia provides the Kelp with all it needs to flourish. The giant fronds, reaching up to 17m high, are home to a menagerie of marine life such as abalone, sea urchins, rock-lobsters and hundreds of species of fish – all part of a delicately balanced ecosystem that we respect and handle with care.

Sustainably harvested

Sustainably harvested

We take our role in protecting this natural resource seriously. That’s why we harvest Ecklonia kelp according to industry regulations . Our certified divers only harvest mature stems, and cut them by hand to ensure younger plants aren’t damaged in the process . From our own observations, we also know that clearing away the largest fronds thins the forest canopy, allowing sunlight to reach the seabed so smaller plants have the chance to grow and flourish. What’s more, we only harvest every two years to allow the forest to fully regenerate and support a rich array of marine life.

Specialist divers

Specialist divers

It takes a raw but fragile ecosystem to cultivate these majestic kelp forests. So when it comes to harvesting, our divers take the utmost care to preserve them. They’re not only certified to harvest the kelp by hand, but work in compliance with regulatory standards set by Marine and Coastal Management (MCM) 26, part of South Africa’s Department of Environmental Affairs. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Extracted carefully

Extracted carefully

From seabed to skin, we go out of our way to preserve the blend of nutrients in Ecklonia maxima. As soon as it’s harvested, the fresh kelp is moved to our nearby production plant for sorting and washing. It undergoes a natural cellular burst process where the stem and its natural compounds are reduced down into a concentrated liquid, we call CEM-K 27. Without heating, dehydrating or freezing involved in the process, the natural qualities of the kelp remain pure 28.
